IN a land where cricket is more than a sport but a way of life, the announcement that Guyana will be one of the host nations for the ICC T20 World Cup has sparked widespread excitement and anticipation.

The dedication to West Indies Cricket in Guyana and across the Caribbean reveals a unique degree of love and passion for the game, unrivaled anywhere else in the world.

In an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, veteran sportsman and proud Guyanese native, Steven Jacobs, shared his delight at Guyana being chosen to host part of this prestigious tournament. Jacobs, a former cricketer, highlighted the immense benefits that such events bring not only to the sport but also to the country’s economy and unity.

“Guyana hosting the ICC T20 World Cup is an excellent move for the country’s sports tourism industry,” Jacobs stated enthusiastically. “When you look at sports tourism and its economic spill-offs—hotels, restaurants, jewellery stores, and even local vendors—hosting this tournament brings tremendous benefits.”

Jacobs also praised President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for his unwavering support of West Indies cricket. “The president is a passionate supporter and fan of West Indies cricket. His dedication to hosting this cricket carnival and other activities showcases his commitment to uniting the people and generating revenue opportunities for everyone,” Jacobs noted.

Urging fans to secure their tickets early, Jacobs emphasised the importance of strong local support. “I know we take our cricket seriously; we are deeply invested in it. I urge all Guyanese to go out and support our boys and the West Indies team. They need that support from us, not just for a game or two, but for us to win the tournament.”

Jacobs acknowledged the fervent and vocal nature of Caribbean cricket fans but also highlighted the region’s renowned hospitality. “It doesn’t matter what happens on the field; at the end of the day, we are united as a people. That’s what sports is supposed to do: bring unity and togetherness, even if we disagree on the outcome,” he said.

Expressing collective wishes, Jacobs added, “I just want to wish our boys all the best. Know that you have all of Guyana and the Caribbean supporting you, and let us keep the trophy home.”
Earlier this year, Guyana’s 2024 T20 World Cup Brand Ambassador and former West Indies Captain, Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan, also expressed his excitement about Guyana hosting the tournament for the second time. “Playing at home can be an advantage, but it could put more pressure on the players. It’s always exciting due to the atmosphere the fans create here and the various attractions Guyana offers,” Sarwan said.
Providence Stadium will host six matches, including a semi-final, with four night-matches. The West Indies will face Uganda on Saturday, June 8, at 20:30 hours. Tickets are available at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) office in Georgetown.
With the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon, the fervor for cricket in Guyana and the broader Caribbean continues to shine brightly, promising unforgettable moments for fans and players alike.
