Historical Background / Description:
The Cenotaph is located in central Mabaruma and was constructed of reinforced concrete. It is a pillar-like structure that tapers towards the top. The monument commemorates those British Guiana soldiers who died in World Wars I (1914-1918) and II (1939-1945). On a yearly basis, wreaths are laid at the site in recognition of Remembrance (Poppy) Day.
